Previously working in the furniture industry, It was surprising at how often people asked how to dispose of their used furniture, especially mattresses.
Second hand furniture can be sold, but what about mattresses?
Intrigued, a few of us began to investigate and research options for clients.
Mattresses unlike furniture are generally not deemed fit for re-sale or donation to charity. The only apparent option people had was to dump them in Landfill. However Landfill dumping I learnt was a major environmental issue in Australia and in fact Worldwide. Issues such as the enormous space taken up by mattresses and the damage the cause to machinery in Landfill operations.
There had to be a another way!
Further investigation and research led my team to realising that we could actually solve the problem. The answer was simple, collect mattresses from people or organisations for a small fee, and then recycle them. In fact we can re-cycle 95% of the components of a mattress.
We could help do our part to save the environment. But we could go further!
We found that some mattresses are in really good condition. But they can not be given to Charity because of health concerns. We found that we could solve that too, but cleaning and sanitising the mattress. So when we collect a good mattress suitable for a child or adult in desperate need, we clean and sanitise it and donate it directly to Charity.
We could help others. So we formed BedCollect a company that driven by people who want to make a difference to the environment and to people!
